We appreciate the question. Most aquarium carbon is dusty and the pores in the carbon are clogged with ash. Our carbon goes through a deep cleaning process to remove much of the trapped ash. How does water flow?

It does look like your filter pads are backward. Water flows from the back of your filter and overflows into the aquarium which means the soft side of the filter pad goes towards the back of the filter and the rough side goes towards the aquarium side. Move the filter pads forward away from the back wall of the filter to allow for proper flow. This is accomplished by using a frame from your old cartridge. Please see attached picture.
