Could FilterFirst be used in a AquaClear 50 in place of the foam sponge that they supply, giving more room for additional media?

FilterFirst pads are excellent for keeping aquarium water crystal clear, but they may not be the best choice for your AquaClear 50. The AquaClear sponge not only removes particles from the water but also serves as a biological filter by fostering beneficial bacteria. These bacteria help break down fish waste and excess food, maintaining a healthy environment for your fish.

The sponge can be rinsed every one to two weeks in dechlorinated or old tank water to preserve the beneficial bacteria and then reused. While our dual-density premium pads are durable, reusable, and great for removing large to fine particles, they are typically used as prefilters or mechanical filters, not as biological filters. If your AquaClear 50 is functioning well, I’d recommend sticking with the current setup.
